Feeding America and the World: Food Security is a Shared Responsibility

By Jean Ragalie, R.D.
President
National Dairy Council

At today’s “Future of Food: Food Security in the 21st Century” conference, Robert Thompson of Johns Hopkins University posed the question, “Can the world’s famers feed the growing population at reasonable costs without destroying the environment?” Thompson stated, “The world’s farmers will be asked to feed the equivalent of two Chinas in the next 40 years.”

However, food security is not a 2050 challenge, it’s a 2012 challenge and it’s not just for business or government to solve, everyone plays a role.

Many are joining the conversation, including dairy farmers and dairy companies, who realize their important role in the shared responsibility we all have to nourish the growing population in an environmentally friendly way.

And, speaking of shared responsibility, earlier today, a partnership was announced among Feeding America, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and National Dairy Council (founded by dairy farmers) to help fight hunger in America and promote healthy food choices. View this video to hear more about this partnership directly from Elaine Waxman of Feeding America and dairy farmer Ray Prock.
