The science behind dairy’s nutrition is some of the best research done in the world, but the world can be a skeptical place. No matter what, it seems we always hear, “Well, of course your research makes dairy look good! It was paid for by dairy farmers!”
Well, that’s a leap that can’t be made with confidence. Our research is peer-reviewed and subject to the scrutiny that all good research must go through, and now, a Tufts University report says “Dairy Funding Doesn’t Bias Obesity Research.” I capitalized that because it’s the headline of the story in Dairy Today. The study compared dairy checkoff-funded research with research done by the National Institutes of Health and determined that our work was unaffected by its funding. This is a big deal all by itself, but what makes this especially significant is that one of the researchers at Tufts has been critical of checkoff programs, including the dairy checkoff. This is a pretty good indicator that when we talk about dairy’s benefits, it’s coming from a very trusted source.
