Dairy Farming: A Community Business

While only 2 percent of Americans live on farms, they interact with a large network of local people and businesses on a daily basis.

For example, out of the 600 or so people who live in Firth, Neb., Prairieland Dairy employs folks from 60 families -- and that number represents just employees. Dairies may work with a large number of local businesses, too. LuAnn Troxel of Troxel Dairy Farm in Hanna, Ind., once counted that her family farm works with about 200 local businesses.
