The holiday season is upon us, and for most, that means family gatherings, warm meals and a cozy cup of hot cocoa by the fireplace. However, for the more than 46 million Americans, including 12 million children, who rely on Feeding America member food banks, the holidays can also be a time when food insecurity is felt even more intensely.
For a family struggling with food insecurity, a gallon of milk is truly a gift that can make the season brighter. On average, food bank clients receive the equivalent of one gallon of milk per person per year, which can make it more difficult to get all the nutrients milk provides. As health and wellness experts, you know the importance of milk in diet and can work together to make sure everyone has access to it. That’s why the dairy community, from farmers to milk companies, is working together to be an angel for a family in need and help give the gift of milk, and the essential nutrients it provides, through The Great American Milk Drive.
On Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving on December 1, and throughout the holidays, the dairy community will use the power of our collective voice and join the conversation to spread an important message that has the potential to help families in our communities. You can join with us by following the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.
With one third of annual giving happening during the holidays, this is a crucial time to take part and help fight food insecurity in communities across the country. We encourage you to support the cause. With your help, we can inspire local communities to give thanks for what they have by giving the gift of highly desired, nutrient-rich milk to families who need it most.
