Shannan D. Young, RD, SNS

Shannan Young was raised in a family where healthy eating and active living were a part of daily life. With fond childhood memories of growing up on her family farm raising animals, gardening and cooking with her parents, family mealtimes were always fresh, local and delicious. As a wife and mom of three boys, she is carrying on these family traditions in her home.

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Community Nutrition from the University of California, Davis, she became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and credentialed School Nutrition Specialist. She came to realize the negative impact obesity has on health after spending the first five years of her career working as a renal dietitian. This experience ignited a passion to create a culture of wellness in schools; first working for the fifth largest school district in California for 11 years and then for the California Department of Education for six years. Today she share her passion for healthy eating and active living as Dairy Council of California’s Food Systems Program Manager. She works with a range of organizations and communities to improve food environments, increase access to healthy food, and inform food and nutrition guidelines. She Co-Chaired the Food Systems Track for the past three Biennial Childhood Obesity Conferences, is the Co-Chair of the California Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative and a steering committee member for the California Farm to School Network.
